Roulette Bets
There are two major types of bets when it comes to playing roulette: Inside Bets and Outside Bets
Inside Bets
These are the wagers that are directly placed on one or more of the numbers that are on the roulette tables. You can place a bet on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 numbers. Here are the wagers:
Bet on 1 number - Straight Bet: This is as simple as it gets. Pick a number and bet on it. You do this by placing the bet inside all of the borders directly on the number. It pays out 35 to 1 on your wager. The odds are 38 to 1 in American (Double Zero) roulette and 37 to 1 in European (Single Zero) roulette.
Bet on 2 numbers - Split Bet: This is a wager that is placed on the line that separates two numbers on the table. For instance, if you wanted to bet on both 12 and 15, you place a wager on the line that connects them. This pays out 17 to 1. The true odds are 19 to 1 and 18.5 to 1 repectively.
Bet on 3 numbers - Street Bet: This is a bet that is place on a row of three numbers. You will place this bet on the outside line of that row. For instance, if you want to bet on 19, 20 and 21, you will place a bet on the outside line of the number 21. Usually, you won't place it on the other side because it could be confused with a 1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 12 bet. The payout is 11 to 1. The true odds are 38 to 3 (12.66 to 1) or 37 to 3 (12.33 to 1) depending on the roulette game you are playing.
There is another way to place a bet on three numbers. In American Roulette, you can place a bet on (0, 1, 2), (0, 00, 2) or (00, 2, 3). In European Roulette, you can place a bet on (0, 1, 2) or (0, 2 3). In order to place this bet, you must place the wager on the point where the three numbers meet.
Bet on 4 numbers - Corner Bet: The bet goes where the name implies ... on the corner where four numbers meet. In European roulette, you can place also place a bet on the (0, 1, 2, 3). To do this, you would place a bet on the outside line that connects the 0 and 3. The payout for a correct wager is 8 to 1. The true odds are 19 to 2 (9.5 to 1) for an American wheel or 37 to 4 (9.25 to 1) for the European.
Bet on 5 numbers - Quint Bet: This bet is only available for the American Roulette wheel. It will cover 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. To place this bet, you will need to put the wager on the outside line at the point where the 00 connects to the 3. It pays 6 to 1, but the true odds are 7.6 to 1. It is the wager that has the highest house advantage.
Bet on 6 numbers - Line Bet or Double Street Bet: This is a wager placed on the outside line where two numbers meet. For instance, if you want to bet on 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30, you will place a wager on the outside line at the point where the 27 and 30 meet. This wagers pays out 5 to 1. The true odds are 19 to 3 (6.3 to 1) or 37 to 6 (6.16 to 1).
Outside Bets
The outside bets are the betting areas that do not have numbers on them. This includes black/red, even/odd, or high/low. These are all even money bets (1 to 1). The only advantage the house has on these wagers is that the 0 or 00 will make all of the outside bets lose.
The other outside bets are called the Thirds bets. These are bets that placed on 12 numbers (a third of the wheel if you don't count the 0 or 00). All thirds bets will pay out 2 to 1. The house advantage is that these bets lose if a 0 or 00 comes up.
Dozens Bets: This includes 1st 12, 2nd 12 and 3rd 12. You will be betting on the block of numbers to the right of the betting area: 1 through 12, 13 through 24 and 25 through 36.
Column Bets: This wager is placed in the box labeled 2 to 1 below the column of numbers. This bet also covers 12 numbers.
